We're going on a word hunt!

In phonics the students have been learning about four types of syllables.  Mastering these syllables can get a bit technical and often presents a challenge to students at the beginning of second grade.  Learning the difference among these syllables can really assist the students in their decoding in reading and in their conventional spelling during writing.

To increase the students interest in this topic and as a means of review, the children went on a word hunt.  23 words were on the loose in our classroom and it was the childrens' job to capture each word and identify the syllable type.  Students were armed with a recording sheet, a pencil, and a clipboard.  When the music started students began their hunt, maneuvering through the ever so dangerous classroom, trying to spy a new word.  When the music stopped students headed to a word, remembering only one child was allowed per word per round.  Once each student had a word they recorded it and identified the syllable type.  When the music began once more they were off and hunting again.

This week we will continue going over our captured words and classifying them by syllable type.
